The scarcity of native cherry wood stems from multiple factors: First, its growth cycle to reach maturity is as long as 15–20 years, and only the heartwood has commercial value (sapwood accounts for over 60% and has a relatively soft texture), resulting in a utilization rate of high-quality heartwood of less than 30%. Second, due to the surging demand for high-end furniture and musical instruments in the mid-to-late 20th century, North American black cherry wood was overharvested, reducing the reserves of native resources by 45% compared to the peak, and currently relying on slow replenishment from artificial forests. Third, natural cherry wood is susceptible to "cherry canker disease," further lowering the rate of healthy mature wood.
